Community Service
Many of our neighbors benefit greatly from the services offered by community-based organizations that work tirelessly to provide shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry, research on illnesses and aid to those who need it most. Each year, Harvard is proud to participate in numerous campaigns that help benefit and sustain these local organizations.
Community Gifts through Harvard
The Community Gifts Through Harvard campaign leads giving in the Education Division of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and serves as the model for an open workplace campaign. The Campaign raises roughly $1million each year in donations from the University community two thirds of which goes to support local non profit agencies.
Spring comes early to Harvard in March with the annual Daffodil Days drive on behalf of the American Cancer Society. University employees purchase bouquets of daffodils, the proceeds of which go to fund cancer research and patient outreach. For this past year and many others, Harvard has been proud to be the top University seller for the local area and through the sale of over 5,500 bouquets, raise over $35,000. In total, nearly $360,000 has been raised over the past 16 years.
Harvard employees, students and retirees show their commitment to fighting against hunger and AIDS every spring by participating in the Walk for Hunger and AIDS Walk. For over 15 years, the Office of Community Affairs has donated 50 cents per mile walked or hour volunteered in the names of those participating.
